in 1965 Sherman Poppen invented a sled for with two skies and a rope called "the snuffer". eventually his daughters homemade toy became a big hit and he licensed the idea and when national selling 500,000 sleds.
In 1969 Dimitrije Milovich started making snowboards after sledding on cafeteria plates in college he made snow boards to ride like a snowboard but work like skies. he started a board company and made snowboarding popular but left the business in 1980.
in 1977 Chuck barefoot started making more modern snowboards by attaching a skateboard deck on top of a plastic sled/ shell.
but in 1980 Jim Burton introduced the first official real ski technology for boards.
The first snowboard race was held outside of Woodstock vermont in 1982.
in 1985 only 39 of the 600 commercial ski lodges allowed snowboarding. since
after the mid 1980's snowboarding blasted off in popularity due to extreme snowboard competitions
and celebrities of the sport getting endorsed by bigger companies.
